Introducing the Musical Manuscripts that come to Sotheby’s auction on 28th November. The sale includes autograph manuscripts by Handel (a leaf for Il pastor fido), Weber, Fanny Mendelssohn, Brahms (an unrecorded draft for the vocal quartet op.31 no.1), César Franck (five autograph manuscripts, including Choral II for organ), Gounod (the opera Cinq-Mars), Offenbach, Bruckner, Mahler, Puccini (the score of Gianni Schicchi used at the première), Richard Strauss, and exceptionally a complete work by Béla Bartók, the Second Rhapsody for Violin and Piano.

There are also four musical albums, one collected by Rossini containing complete songs by Bellini, Meyerbeer, Cherubini and himself, another containing an autograph by Bizet from Carmen, and one containing quotations by Schoenberg, Berg and Webern from a famous concert they gave in 1913. Besides the Bartók manuscript written for Zoltán Székely there are over 40 letters by the composer to the violinist, and letters by Berlioz, Liszt, Martinu, Meyerbeer, Puccini, Rossini and Wagner; together with first editions of works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Shostakovich (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, printed in 1933 before the première), Sanquirico and Wagner (bound for Mathilde Wesendonck).
